When did you begin freelancing?

I freelanced for about four years, then gave it up to take on a full-time job. However, my full-time work fell through and now I'm freelancing again. It looks like I'll be working for myself for the foreseeable future.

What freelancing services do you offer?

Ghostwriting, copywriting, and email writing.

What is your niche?

I'm a niche-free writer.

Give us your background. What were you doing before? Why did you want to become a freelancer?

Before freelancing, I was an international teacher. I joined Peace Corps in 2005, and that opened the door to working abroad. I went from Madagascar to China to Mexico, where I met the love of my life. I loved teaching, but eventually had to face the fact that I don't have the mental strength to work in the classroom. Shockingly, the constant rejection and pain of writing is more comfortable and lighter than working in education.

What resources did you use to learn more about your niche, freelancing, and copywriting in general?

Blogs, newsletters, YouTube, seminars, books, and anything else I can get my hands on.

How did you find your first client?

My wife posted in an alumni FB group and got a nibble from the CEO of a massive travel company in Cancun. Now I'm helping to rewrite their site, blog, and emails.

What methods do you currently use to find clients?

I try anything - Upwork projects, FB posts, Direct outreach, blog articles, literally anything.

On average, how much do you make per month as a freelancer?

About $1,500.

On average, how many hours do you work as a freelancer?

30 hours a week.

How much do you charge for your services as a freelancer?

About $15 an hour.

What are your next goals as a freelancer?

Higher rates, better clients, and more control over my time.

What have you struggled with most in your freelancing business? How have you overcome those struggles?

I'm still struggling with time management and rates.

Do you have any tips for new and/or experienced freelancers?

I would recommend to set up an incredible website and set work hours before anything else. I really wish I had done that before I got any clients.
